Cheers to new beginnings

Sean and I enjoy our cocktails and have sampled many of the specialty cocktail bars in the DC area. Columbia Room was one of the remaining bars we’d heard good things about but hadn’t tried yet. Starting next month Sean and I are cutting out alcohol. Well, with a few exceptions like his birthday in September, our trip back to San Francisco the same month, a wedding in October, and a wine tour in Oregon the weekend after Thanksgiving. But, it’s one of the steps we’re taking to make changes in our lifestyle as we prepare for our next big adventure.  So this weekend we finally made our way to Columbia Room to celebrate the start of new beginnings and toast to the end of a very good chapter.

The Columbia Room is a speakeasy within a bar called The Passenger.  We really like these modern speakeasys.

The format is a drink tasting menu including three cocktails. The first two are already determined by the bartenders. We started with picnic punch, which was very tasty and featured items from the bar’s rooftop garden.

Their rooftop includes a bee hive, which I thought was really cool.  Our second drink, the Come Again is a classic drink that the bartenders found in a 50-year-old entertaining guide for ladies.  It’s a gin drink and unfortunately our bar mates did not like this cocktail.  I’m not sure it was our favorite, but we like gin so it didn’t bother us.

After explaining your favorite types of liquors and tastes, third is crafted specifically for you.

On the left is Sean’s Lost Boy cocktail, a smoky whiskey drink with mole bitters to give it a hint of chocolate.  They did a take a on Gin Fizz for me.  Overall we had a nice evening and it was a good way to toast this chapter.  But once we’re having cocktails again we’ll head to PX, our favorite speakeasy in Alexandria.
